Volunteer medical trainees (medical students, interns, and nursing students) play a vital role in medical camps by providing support, learning, and hands-on assistance while working under the guidance of experienced doctors and nurses. Their participation enhances capacity, improves patient care, and strengthens community health initiatives.

Volunteer Duties

  • Clinical Support & Patient Care
    • Triage & Patient Assessment – Assist in checking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration) and gathering medical histories.
    • Administer Basic Treatments – Under supervision, trainees may assist in wound care, bandaging, and administering vaccinations.
    • Assist in Diagnostics – Help conduct basic laboratory tests (blood sugar, malaria tests) and interpret results.
  • Assisting Medical Professionals
    • Shadow & Learn from Doctors & Nurses – Observe patient consultations and treatment procedures.
    • Support During Minor Surgeries & Procedures – Hand instruments, assist in sterilization, and help maintain hygiene protocols.
    • Prepare & Organize Medical Equipment – Set up and clean examination areas, prepare injections, and restock supplies.
  • Health Education & Community Outreach
    • Teach Basic Health & Hygiene Practices – Educate patients on personal hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention.
    • Promote Maternal & Child Health Awareness – Support awareness on breastfeeding, prenatal care, and childhood vaccinations.
    • Encourage Preventive Healthcare – Teach about dental hygiene, malaria prevention, and chronic disease management.
  • 4. Data Collection & Patient Follow-Up
    • Record & Organize Patient Data – Help with medical documentation, ensuring accurate records for referrals.
    • Support Referral & Follow-Up Cases – Assist in directing patients to specialized care after the camp.
    • Help with Research & Surveys – Gather health statistics to understand community health trends.
  • 5. Logistical & Administrative Assistance
    • Set Up & Manage Patient Flow – Ensure smooth movement of patients through different treatment areas.
    • Distribute Medical Supplies – Assist in organizing and distributing medications and hygiene kits.
    • Support Language & Cultural Mediation – Act as interpreters for patients and assist with culturally sensitive communication.
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credits – Volunteering may count toward professional development requirements.
